Ricky Lynn Barnes, 37, of Merkel, Texas, passed away on June 3, 2025, after a courageous battle with Adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN), a rare genetic disease affecting the brain and spinal cord.
Born in Abilene on September 4, 1987, Ricky was the son of Bobby and Shannon Barnes. He graduated from Merkel High School in 2006 and attended the Colorado School of Mines. At just 19, he began a successful career in the oil and gas industry, becoming the youngest MWD Field Engineer ever hired by Ryan Energy. He later advanced to MWD Coordinator and Directional Driller, working across Texas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and West Virginia. Ricky also worked for Leam Directional, Crescent Directional, and as an independent contractor.
Known for his brilliant mind, sharp wit, and big heart, Ricky loved fishing, cooking, making people laugh, and spoiling his niece and nephews. He will be remembered for living life to the fullest and loving his family and friends fiercely.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby Barnes. He is survived by his mother, Shannon Bagby Barnes of Merkel; brothers D.J. Barnes, Bo Barnes and spouse Misty Folger, and Thomas Barnes and wife Shelby Barnes all of Merkel; nephews Cash and Dawson Barnes of Sweetwater; niece Loralai Barnes of Merkel; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and beloved friends. Also, Ricky is survived by his most loyal, faithful furry companion and protector Koe Wetzel Barnes.
A Celebration of Life is at 2:00 p.m Saturday, June 14, 2025 at The Lovely at Mulberry Creek Square, 910 N. 1st Street, Merkel, Texas.
