Philip Pursley Obituary

Philip Leon Pursley, 85, passed away peacefully Sunday December 17th surrounded by family and friends.

A visitation will be held from 1-2PM on Wednesday December 20th at Merkel Church of Christ. Funeral service will follow at 2PM. Burial service will be at Rose Hill Cemetary in Merkel following the funeral.

Philip was born in Abilene, Texas on March 15, 1938, to Gordon and Nola Mae (Anderson) Pursley. Phillip was a teacher, coach, and farmer, teaching for 30 years between San Angelo, Garland, Abilene, Merkel, and Sweetwater.

Philip was married to his loving wife Jeanette (Lucas) Pursley for 64 years. Together they raised 3 boys Brad, Bart, and Brit. Philip was a loving Son, Husband, Father, and Grandad.

Affectionately known as “Pro” by his fellow classmates, Philip was a 1956 graduate of Merkel High School where he excelled in Basketball, Baseball, and Football. Philip was an inductee to the Merkel Sports Hall of Fame, and earlier this year received the Merkel “Spirit of the Badger” award for being a lifetime supporter of all things Merkel athletics.

Philip was a member of Merkel Church of Christ. He was also a passionate genealogist. He was a member of numerous genealogical societies, notably the Descendents of Austins Old 300 and the General Society of Mayflower Descendants.

Philip had many hobbies, and enjoyed woodworking, fishing, dominoes, the Texas Rangers, and more than anything, supporting his children and grandchildren at their sporting events.

Survivors include his wife Jeanette, sons Brad Pursley and wife Kelly, Bart Pursley and wife Tonda, Brit Pursley and wife Krista. Grandchildren Luke, Jaci, Cade, Kayli, Madi, Kami, Kaydi, Kloe, Brylee, and 5 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Nola Mae Pursley and siblings David Pursley and Sandra Fatheree.

Memorials may be made to the Merkel Historical Museum.
