Philip was born on March 18, 1946 in Merkel, TX to Clayton and Melba (Shugart) Doan. Philip was a working machine from a very young age. From standing on milk crates, washing dishes at restaurants in Merkel to farm work for the family or local residents specifically in the Mulberry Canyon area, and working for his Uncle Buddy Windham at his Fina service station in Merkel. Philip attended Merkel Schools, and was drafted into the United States Army, serving in Vietnam. Upon returning home from Vietnam, legend has it that Philip chased Kathy Whisenhunt “all over town” and it paid off for him as they were married on June 21st, 1968. Philip spent 54 years in the electrical supply business, starting at Cummins Supply in Abilene, TX in 1967. Philip also held positions at Abilene Winlectric with business partner and great friend Bobby Kirklen, Sweetwater Electric, and Armstrong Electrical Supply in Abilene. Philip officially retired, only because of illness in May of 2021. Philip immersed himself into work “after business hours” as well. Yard work and just manual labor in general was a passion of his. Philip took great pride in his, and his Mother-In-Law’s always manicured yard and property. Philip greatly enjoyed following his kids and grandkids in all of their activities, and the Doan Boys trips to Ruidoso were very special to him.

Philip was preceded in death by his parents Clayton and Melba, Father-In-Law L.C. Whisenhunt, Brothers-In-Law Don Whisenhunt, Jim Toliver, Bob Tate, and niece Courtney Ramsey.
