Leatrice Rena West, 96, of Abilene passed away May 31, 2023, at her home in Abilene. She was born June 8, 1926, to William Walter and Laura Grey West and was born in Floyd County Texas. Leatrice graduated from High School in 1945, attended West Texas College in Canyon Texas and earned her B.S degree in Education, she also earned a librarian certificate from Colorado State, Texas A &M and Baylor University.
Leatrice was a teacher and coach for 36 years in 11 different Texas schools and retired in 1986. She touched so many young people, and many have continued to contact her for help and advice. She was a member of TSTA, NEA and many book clubs.
Leatrice loved working with arts and crafts using her imagination to create different things, she could do most anything.
She is survived by a brother Billy Joe West from Whitney TX, many nieces and nephews and her adopted daughter June Owen who was God’s gift to the entire family, she was a good and faithful friend having been “caretaker” to many of us and was my greatest success and one of the greatest athletes I ever coached.
Leatrice was preceded in death by her parents, brother O.D West and wife Jean from Amarillo, sisters Betty Wosnitzky and Husband Dennis of Amarillo, Rosalie Clark and husband Harvey Lockwood of Amarillo, and Gebo Clark of Amarillo
There will be a Graveside Service for Leatrice at 1:00 p.m., June 3, 2023, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel, Texas.
