Kay Lynn Bagby Bright passed away peacefully on August 19, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on May 3, 1944, in Merkel, Texas, Kay’s life was shaped by faith, family, and quiet strength. As the wife of a dedicated high school coach, she lived in numerous towns across Texas—including Orange, Big Spring, Corpus Christi, and Humble—before settling in Mexia and eventually returning to her hometown of Merkel. Remarkably, the last home she lived in before entering the Merkel Nursing Center was the same house in which she was born.
Kay retired from the United States Postal Service after a long and steady career. Over the years, she served faithfully as a rural route carrier, city carrier, and later in maintenance inventory. She was a woman who took pride in hard work and always found ways to serve others with grace and humility.
Above all else, Kay was a devoted and loving mother. She raised her sons, Jeff and Jon, with unwavering support, steady guidance, and a deep, abiding love that shaped their lives and continues to carry them forward.
A devout member of the First Baptist Church, Kay’s faith guided her life and sustained her spirit. In her spare time, she especially enjoyed volunteering at the Merkel Museum, where she connected with the town’s history and community—a town she truly loved.
Kay is survived by her sons, Jeff and Carrie Beasley, Jon and Sheila Bright; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and her siblings Edith Kennedy, Ferrell Bagby, and Shannon Barnes. She was preceded in death by her parents, OJ and Bernice Lewis Bagby and her brother, Arthur Bagby. Kay's extended family includes many beloved nephews, nieces, and lifelong friends. Kay’s legacy lives on in the lives she touched—with quiet kindness, enduring faith, and deep love.
A service will be held on September 6, 10am at Starbuck Funeral Home, Merkel, Texas Her ashes will be placed by the family in the White Church Cemetery at an appropriate time.
In lieu of flowers, food, or gifts, the family would ask that donations to the Merkel Museum be made in her honor.
