It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joy Darlene "Dolly" Schauf Houghton, aged 82, of Big Spring, TX. On June 13, 2024, in Abilene, TX, Darlene peacefully departed this world, finding eternal rest and opening her eyes to the glory of heaven.
Born in Wichita, KS, in 1941, Darlene experienced a rich tapestry of life, moving frequently with her family and attending many schools. Despite these changes, her resilient spirit and warm heart shone brightly. She found her soulmate, Donald Ray Houghton, in Wichita, KS, and they were united in marriage on September 6, 1958, in Goodland, KS. Their love story blossomed in Amarillo, TX, where Don worked as a mechanic for Ryder Truck Rental, and Darlene dedicated herself to various jobs, ultimately cherishing her role as a loving wife, devoted mother of two, and an employee at Western Data.
Darlene's life was marked by her boundless love and compassion. She welcomed everyone with open arms, and her home was a sanctuary filled with warmth, faith, and kindness. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family, as every child who entered her home was embraced as part of her family through her love of Christ.
Darlene is reunited in heaven with her beloved husband, Donald Ray Houghton Sr., her parents Elva and Clarence Schauf, her siblings Clarence Faye Schauf and Larry Schauf, her best friend Sallie Marie Frazier, and numerous other dear family members and friends.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her children, Denise Houghton-Wilkinson and her husband Don, and Donald Ray Houghton Jr. Darlene is also survived by her sister-in-laws Nancy Houghton and Phyllis Houghton, three grandchildren, Deonna Walker and her husband Rob, DeVawn Abbie Turner, and Jadon Wilkinson and his wife Amanda, and her eight great-grandchildren, Givan Ray Walker, Susan DeVawn Turner, Taylor Bodine, Hayle Bodine, Carley Wilkinson, Daxter Molina, Bryan (Beau) McKeever, and Evelina Walker.
Darlene's family expresses heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Luney, the compassionate nurses and aides from Hospice, especially Jordan, Judy, and Jace, who provided unwavering support during her final days. Special thanks to Chaplain James for his spiritual comfort, and to all those who have shared in our grief and offered their prayers.
In lieu of a funeral service, which will be held at a later date, Darlene is in the tender care of Starbucks Funeral Home in Merkel, TX. The Wilkinson family deeply appreciates the love and prayers extended by friends and family during this difficult time.
In remembrance of Darlene, we celebrate her remarkable life, her unwavering faith, and the immeasurable love she bestowed upon all who knew her. She will forever be cherished in our hearts.
