Joe T. Campbell was born on November 3, 1933 to Roger and Virgie “Peggy” Campbell in Winters, TX. Joe grew up with 4 sisters (Lilian ‘Libby” Timms, Shirley McCoy, Carolyn McCoy and Peggy Ann) and spent much of his childhood moving around different parts of Texas. It was while living in Plainview, TX that Joe met his wife Margaret Ringwald Campbell and began his family. Joe served as an Airman Third Class, 3 years active duty in the Air Force from 1954 to 1957 during which time he was stationed in Germany. After the service, Joe and his family eventually moved to Amarillo and then later to Abilene, TX.
Joe was a family man. He had a great affinity for telling stories and loved to (good naturedly) pick on his loved ones. He spent many years buying and rebuilding cars as a part time hobby, collecting cookie jars, and traveling. He also had a deep love for Mexican food, he’s more than likely solely responsible for Pancho’s still being in business. He hated being idle and often would find something to build in his down time, thus the three patios added one after another off the back of his home of 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, both of his parents, and a grandson P03 Terry Campbell.
Joe is survived by all three of his children: Becky Blessen and husband Tom of Galveston, TX, Ricky Campbell and wife Delinda of Merkel, TX, and Michael Campbell and wife Misty of Amarillo, TX; 6 grandchildren: Jacob, Adam, Amanda, James, Korie and Daniel; and 18 great-grandchildren: Koda, Kyra, Chase, Katie, Landin, Kaleb, Zach, Tristen, Aerilyn, Arrielle, Logan, Madison, Jaxson, Hartlyn Kailein, Bryce, Cayden and Stephanie; and 1 great-great grandson, Silo.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5pm to 7pm on Monday, January 4, 2021 at Starbuck Funeral Home in Merkel. Graveside services will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the Abilene Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
