Grayce Joan Reed, 91, was born in Kingston, Oklahoma to Christine De Laura Carroll Wheeler and Gilbert Carl Wheeler on March 4, 1931. She graduated from Abilene High School and then attended Hardin - Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. She married Winford Glenn Reed on April 14, 1949 in Abilene, Texas. Glenn and Joan moved to Merkel, Texas in 1951 where Glenn served as Band Director. She later worked for Cyrus P Insurance Co and then for the Merkel School System for thirty years before retiring. She was the Merkel High School Majorette Sponsor for 23 year, a Scout Leader for her boys, a little league Mom, and a girls’ softball coach. She sang in the First United Methodist Church Choir, volunteered in the Church Office, managed the First United Methodist Church fellowship hall gatherings, enjoyed being in the quilting group and was a very active church member. She also loved to cook, especially pecan pies. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and her love for them was easy to see. For all close family and friends she was known as Nonnie.
Nonnie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glenn Reed, and grandson-in-law Doug Alldredge.
Nonnie is survived by sons: Alan Reed and wife Judy of Cleburne, Texas and Terry Reed and wife DeAnn of Portland, Texas; granddaughters: Andrea Allen and husband Bill of Cleburne, Texas, Tabi Alldredge of Abilene, Texas, Trisha Baughman and husband Nate of Keller, Texas, Ashley Reed of Portland, Texas; and grandson Seth Reed of Portland, Texas; great – grandchildren: Laurel Anderson and husband Calvin of Merkel, Texas, Cami Alldredge, Cossette Alldredge, and Jocelyn Alldredge of Abilene, Texas, Grant Allen of Denton, Texas, Antares Ewell of Denton, Texas, Skye Ewell of Cleburne, Texas, Peyton Baughman and Jackson Baughman of Keller, Texas.
Pallbearers are Seth Reed, Bill Allen, Nate Baughman, Gary Hicks, Greg Dempsey, Tony Medauer. Honorary pallbearers are Finley Barnett and Don Wilson.
Visitation will be Friday, February 3, from 5 to 7p.m. at Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel in Merkel, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 4th at First United Methodist Church of Merkel, Texas with Rev. Rhonda Greenwood officiating and Kenny Stephens as musician. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery in Abilene, Tx. Services are under the direction of Starbuck Funeral Home.
