Jim Shugart "Shug" Obituary

Jim Howard Shugart “Shug” age 75 passed from this life on March 24, 2022.  He was born in Merkel TX on May 30, 1946 to Henry Howard Shugart and Flossie Odessa (Stout) Shugart.

Jim had many jobs over his lifetime, but he was most proud of the 18 years he spent as a dispatcher and firefighter for the city of Merkel.  In his younger days he sang in honky-tonks with the Pack boys. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. In his later years he enjoyed walking the hills in search of arrowheads and Indian artifacts. He read many books on the American Indian and spent his time watching old westerns on TV. He had a love for old cars and pickups and spent many hours fixing up those vehicles to putter around town and get him to the coffee shop to hang out with his friends. He collected antiques and surrounded himself with those collectables until the day he passed.

Jim married Mary Sue Ingram in 1968. They had 32 years of love and life until her passing in December 2000.  He never remarried. They had one child together, daughter Debra Gayle Davis who he affectionately called Baby all her life.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary Sue, Mother Odessa Shugart, Father Howard Shugart and brothers Bobby and Doug Shugart.

Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Gayle Davis and husband Randy “Bungi” Davis of Merkel. His two grandchildren Kelcie Davis and Cody Davis, of Abilene. His sister and “running buddy” Janice (Shugart) Brown, his brothers Lloyd and Joe Shugart all of Merkel and many nieces, nephews extended family and friends.

The family is planning an intimate gathering graveside where he will be laid to rest next to his wife at a later date.
