Jesse Jackson Sr. was born in Fort Worth, Texas July 5, 1937. He passed away in Abilene, Texas, on October 23, 2022, comforted by family.
Jesse grew up all over the great state of Texas as his family traveled for his father’s work. He and his 5 brothers, “The Jackson Brothers,” are well known for the shenanigans they would get into.
In 1956, He settled down with his childhood friend and sweetheart, Margie. They had four children together and gave a home to several other children in need of a family. He was a hard-working man, providing for his family as a salvage dealer. After the kids were raised, Jesse and Margie parted ways, still sharing a deep friendship until his passing.
In 1984, Jesse married Velma. With this union, Jesse gained four more children. Jesse and Velma enjoyed 30 years of marriage, loving on their grandkids and traveling together. Velma passed away in 2014.
Jesse loved playing the slots, dancing - especially the waltz, and watching old westerns on Grit TV.
Jesse is probably most known for his love of fishing. Whether going out on the boat in the gulf for some grouper and shark or sitting by the lake hoping for a bass, Jesse loved sitting with one of his brothers, a good friend, or a grandkid swapping tall tales, cuttin’ up, and catchin’ fish.
The only thing Jesse loved more than fishing was his family, especially all his grandkids, greats, great-greats, and his nieces and nephews. He’d often walk into the house and holler “Young’uns” and he would pile them all in the truck. He taught them to dance and to fish. He always had a good story to tell.
Jesse is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Annie Jackson. His wife, Velma. His eldest son, Jesse Jackson Jr., and brothers: Bobby, Frankie, Skeeter, and James.
He is survived by the last of the Jackson Brothers, Tommy and his wife Katherine. His children: Brenda, Carol and her husband Joe, and Michael and his wife Beth. 23 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews too numerous to count.
Although our hearts are heavy, we celebrate his life and find comfort that he is with Jesus. Thankful that we have the family he built to comfort each other. Grab someone you love and cast a line in memory of our dear Jesse.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00AM Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at Starbuck Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held immediately following at 10:00AM at Starbuck Funeral Home.
