On July 4th, 2023, Andrew Hugh Baker passed peacefully from this life, surrounded by his family. Hugh was born November 3, 1933 to Andrew A and Letha (Brookreson) Baker in Merkel, Tx. He graduated from Merkel High School in 1952 and was drafted into the US Navy in 1957, where he served on the USJohn R Craig destroyer till August 1959. Hugh enjoyed a 45-year career as an employee of Taylor Electric Cooperative. He also farmed, raising wheat & cotton, as well as raising cattle. Hugh was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Merkel and also served on the board of SUN Water Co-op.
His survivors include, wife Gayle Baker of Merkel; Loyce Baker Davis of Arizona; Lyle (Donna) Baker of Abilene; Lanae (Ryan) Rainey of Carrollton, Tx.; grandchildren: Jayson Leving of Colorado, Amity (Thomas) of Kansas; Rebekah (Jacob) Morales of Abilene; Andrew Leving of Utah, Devanie (Kasey) Cantrell, of Justin, Tx; Abbilynn Tople (J.P.) of Tuscola; Emma, Lily, Anthony, Abi & Adam Rainey of Carrollton; great-grandchildren: Aaron, Ella, Ava & Evan Humphries; Evelyn & Madilyn Morales, Kolton & Baker Cantrell, (due in August) Collier Grace Tople.
Visitation will be Friday, July 7th from 6-7:30 at Starbuck Funeral Home in Merkel.
Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 8th at 10am at Starbuck Funeral Home in Merkel, followed by a short graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery.
