Fred Valfre, 74, of Abilene, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on February 6, 2025, at home with his loving wife by his side.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at the Texas Veterans Cemetery on February 13, 2025, at 1 p.m., under the direction of Starbuck Funeral Home. Lane
Boyd will officiate.
Fred was born on July 9, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, to Eustacio Jr. and Juanita Valfre. He graduated from Fox Tech High School in San Antonio and, soon after, made the honorable decision to serve his country. He first enlisted in the U.S. Army before transitioning to the U.S. Air Force in 1976. As a Tactical Aircraft Maintenance Craftsman, Fred traveled the world, serving at numerous overseas air bases. After 20 years of dedicated service and earning multiple commendations, he retired from the Air Force in 1996 at Dyess Air Force Base, where he settled into a well-earned retirement with his family.
Throughout his life, Fred had many passions. He developed a love for woodworking at a young age, crafting furniture pieces that stood the test of time. While stationed at Dyess, he played as a pitcher for a Base MWR Softball Team and was an enthusiastic member of a weekly bowling league, forging lifelong friendships through both. A devoted NASCAR fan and HotWheels collector, Fred spent his retirement traveling to races and hobbyist shows, always in search of the next great find. He especially cherished these trips when accompanied by his wife and grandson, Tomas, sharing with them the joy of “the hunt”. His love for the 80’s rock bands and “air guitar” will live on through his family, as their shared passion and the time spent together created enduring bonds that will continue to resonate.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents and his four siblings: Junior, Bea, Henry, and Yolanda.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Dawn; his children, Marcus, Rachael, Michael and family, Scott and family, and Rebecca and family; and his cherished grandson, Tomas. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will forever hold his memory close.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Al Sayyad and the many physicians who provided Fred with such compassionate care over the years.
