Elizabeth Joyce Smith

Elizabeth (Betty) Joyce Smith, 89, of Merkel passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of August 10, 2021. She was born August 31, 1931 to Eleanor Page White and Edmund B White in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Betty spent her childhood years in Wollaston, Massachusetts and graduated from North Quincy High School in 1951. Betty is survived by five children; George Smith, Janet Smart, Joyce Duplessie, Carol Milton and Susan Goodwill; numerous grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and one cousin Priscilla Rae. Betty was a Girl Scout Leader in Maine for many years and a lifetime member of the VFW. After the death of her husband Stanley she moved to Texas in 1992 and lived with her daughter Susan Goodwill. She was a member of Southwest Drive United Methodist Church, was a gospel singer and did volunteer work at Abilene Regional Medical Center for 14 years. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.
