David "Buster" Tarpley

David Earnest “Buster” Tarpley, 71, of Merkel, TX passed away on January 16, 2024 in Abilene, TX.

Buster was born in Merkel to E.L. “Babe” and Billie Tarpley on November 26, 1952. He graduated from Merkel High School in 1971. After graduating he attended San Angelo State University, Tarleton State University, and ended up at Texas Tech University. 

Buster married the love of his life, LeeAnn Holloway, on July 15, 1972. They moved back to Merkel where they made their life together. He farmed and ranched in the Merkel area while raising their three children. 

Buster later went to work for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice where he retired in 2017.

Buster loved his family, enjoyed family gatherings and sharing a good story. He was an avid reader and hunter. Buster enjoyed cowboying and being with friends. 

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, LeeAnn; children Brandi Morris husband K.C., Tamara Norton husband Byron, and Adam Tarpley wife Shortie. Three grandchildren that he cherished dearly, RyAnne Morris, Cooper Morris, and Emily Norton; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and one dear aunt, June Gregory.

Pallbearers are Adam Tarpley, K.C. Morris, Byron Norton, Cooper Morris, Kelly Woolard, David Graves, Steve Redondo, Mike Roberts.

“Ornery” Honorary Pallbearers are Jim Essinger, Paul Choat, Doug Bagley, Freddie Toombs.

Visitation will be at Starbucks Funeral Home in Merkel on Friday, January 19, from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Services will be on Saturday, January 20, at 2:00pm at the Merkel Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel.

Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society, Merkel Cemetery Association, or a charity close to your heart.
