Claudette Allen Harris went to be with Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on May 4, 2025. She was at home with family; she fell asleep and woke up to see Jesus coming for her!
Claudette was born on July 28, 1939, in Stevens County, Texas, on a small farm just outside of Breckenridge. She was the second born daughter to Richard Milo Allen and Lucille Pauline Richmond Allen.
In the summer of 1943 when Claudette was 4, her family moved from the farm to the big city of Houston, where they lived in the DeGeorge Hotel for 3 months.
One of Claudette’s earliest memories was in downtown Houston atop her daddy’s shoulders. It was September 1945 & she was 6 years old; crowds filled the streets, confetti was falling, American flags flying, and shouts of joy went out – WW II had come to an end; America was rejoicing!
Her family moved around a lot, though always staying in the Houston area. She attended several different elementary schools before going to Hamilton Jr. High and graduating from Reagan High School in May 1957.
In the fall of 1959 Claudette was with a friend at the Princess Drive-In, where the car next to them had her friend’s beau, and another handsome young man – Warren. The foursome double – dated that night at the drive in theater. That was October 31,1959. Warren and Claudette soon found themselves on a second date, both emphatically stating they were not interested in marriage; however, by Christmas they were making wedding plans, and on March 11,1960 they said “I Do” barely 4 months after that first October night. Their love story was just beginning.
Claudette always said, “Wherever Warren was, that’s where I wanted to be” and that remained true even when Warren got drafted. She never wanted to fly on an airplane, but when Warren was sent to Japan (by “The Dirty Rotten Army”- Claudette’s words) she lived with her parents, saved her money, and bought a $500 plane ticket so she could be with Warren, her true love.
In the next few years Warren and Claudette were blessed with 2 children, and their home was always filled with life and song! Claudette loved to sing. Whether she was in church with her family or preparing meals in the kitchen, her heart was full of the joy of the Lord. Claudette has always said she raised her children on her knees – and she did.
Warren and Claudette were members of Temple Oaks Baptist Church in Houston for many years, where they were both very active in serving. Claudette loved teaching her 3rd grade Sunday School class and Training Union on Sunday nights. She was in her element teaching them memory verses and songs!
Although she grew up going to church, she didn’t give her life to the Lord until April 1969. The day she gave her life to the Lord she said, “a light bulb came on”. She said, “Nothing changed on the outside, but on the inside, I was a new person.”
In 1980 They packed up and moved from Houston to their home in Mulberry Canyon, where Claudette had a vision of her grandchildren running and playing in the country. Claudette loved children! And God gave her grandchildren – as many as nine little ones at one time grew up going to that Canyon house, where she taught them songs and memory verses; where she fed them the Bible, and biscuits and gravy.
Because of Warren and Claudette, many other cousins, nieces and nephews grew up with Mulberry Canyon memories also. One of the verses that she loved and lived by was Deuteronomy 6:7, about teaching your children God’s laws in your everyday life, and that’s exactly what she did. In March of this year, Warren and Claudette had been married 65 wonderful years. She loved being a mother, and she loved being Warren’s wife. Her legacy of love and God’s faithfulness in her life will continue for generations to come, even to the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him Be the Glory! Amen!
People who greeted her at The Pearly Gates were her parents; her sister Yvonne; her stillborn baby; her nephew, John Addison Allen; and her two grandsons, Lorne Alan Sloan, Jr and William Lorne Sloan.
She is survived by her husband, Warren Loyd Harris; her daughter, SueAnn Sloan and husband, Lorne; her son, Milo Warren Harris and wife, Carolyn; her nephew, Richard Arlie Allen; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be 5-7 on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Starbuck Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00am Saturday, May 10, 2025, at First Baptist Church, Merkel, TX. Burial will follow at White Church Cemetery.
