Services to celebrate the life of Billy Bob Toombs, 79, will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday April 11, 2021 at Merkel Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery directed by Starbuck Funeral Home. Vistation will be Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 4:00p.m.-6:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Billy Bob was born February 27, 1942, in Merkel, Texas to Willie B and Loyce (Campbell) Toombs and passed from this earth on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. Billy Bob graduated from Merkel High School in 1960 and from Abilene Christian College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in range management. Billy Bob served in the Army National Guard. He married LaJuana McPherson on June 11, 1966 in Big Spring, Texas. Billy Bob and LaJuana moved to Dallas, Texas for a short time where he was employed by Van Waters and Rogers. He then returned to Merkel, Texas to continue the family farming business. Billy Bob was a successful businessman with many ventures in farming, ranching, oil and gas. He was an active member of the Farmers Union, organizing the tractor cade in Washington, DC in 1979. Billy Bob served on the Taylor County ASCS committee for many years. Billy Bob served as a board member for the Taylor Central Appraisal District. In 2012, the Billy Bob and LaJuana Toombs Family were named the Taylor County Extension Ag Committee, Farm Family of the Year. He was a lifelong member of the Merkel Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon for over 40 years. Billy Bob is survived by his wife LaJuana Toombs of Merkel, daughter Krista Pursley and husband Brit of Merkel, Texas; son Brandon Toombs and wife Jennifer of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Kami, Kaydi and Kloe Pursley of Merkel, Texas and Gracie and Wyatt Toombs of Dallas, Texas. He is also survived by his brother Freddy Toombs and wife Kay of Merkel, Texas; sister Susie Toliver and husband Larry of Merkel, Texas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, extended family and many special friends. Billy Bob was proceeded in death by his parents Willie B and Loyce (Campbell) Toombs; in-laws Jo and Calvin McPherson; maternal grandparents Robert L. and Mattie Lou (Gilmore) Campbell; paternal grandparents Will (WW) and Bernice (Crow) Toombs.
