Billy Newell Lucas, 76 of Merkel died unexpectedly in his home on Tuesday, June 8,
2021. He was born in Merkel TX on December 18, 1944 to Newell Lucas and Tressie (Marshall)
Lucas.
Billy graduated from Merkel High School in 1963, then spent a year working odd jobs in
anticipation of the love of his life, Sarah (Harris) Lucas, graduating from high school. They were
married on August 14, 1964, and enjoyed almost 56 years together until Sarah’s death in July of
this past year.
Billy spent most of his working career as a contract oilfield welder for several different oil
companies. In the lean years he would build barns, carports, boat docks etc, he even served in
the kitchen as a cook in Sarah’s restaurant (Pug and Leo’s). Billy served in the Merkel Volunteer
Fire Department for many years as a member, assistant chief and chief. He was also a lifelong
member of the Merkel Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and then eventually as an
elder.
The impact that Billy had on those he came in contact with, regardless of the setting, is
immeasurable. The wisdom, the work ethic, the life of character and integrity, and the love for
family that he demonstrated on a daily basis made a difference in so many lives. The past 11
months, in response to the void caused by Sarah’s passing, he filled his time with friends, family
and golf. Billy’s family would like to thank all of his golfing friends for taking good care of him. He
actually played 45 holes this past Saturday, and by all accounts was a winner and had a blast.
Billy is survived by his son Russell and his wife Rosie of Hamlin/Sweetwater, his
daughter Teresa Owens and her husband Joel of Merkel. He is survived by 6 grandchildren,
Tyler Lucas of Abilene, Ryne Lucas (Emily) of Hamlin/Sweetwater, Tucker Lucas (Kaylie) of
Abilene, Zach Owens (Ashley) of Merkel, Kyle Owens of Merkel and Dacia Owens also of

Parker Lucas of Hamlin/Sweetwater. Billy is also survived by 2 sisters, Shirlene Evans of Pierre
Part Louisiana and Christie Barnett and husband Finley of Merkel, numerous nieces, nephews
and cousins.
