Alton Farris Neill, of Merkel, Texas, passed away on December 13 th, surrounded by family, at a hospital in Abilene, Texas.
Farris was born in Merkel, Texas to T.J. and Una (Garrett) Neill on June 12, 1944. He graduated from Merkel High School in 1962, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian College. He married Freda Daniel on June 10, 1966 in Abilene, Texas. Farris retired as the branch manager of Border States Electric in 2006. He also taught biology at Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas for several years in the 1970’s and after retirement he spent several years substitute teaching at Merkel High School. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the students. Over his lifetime, Farris was active in his church, the Rotary Club, officiating football and following his kids and grandkids in whichever activities they were involved. He volunteered his time by serving on several boards, having been the board president for Blair Water Supply Corporation at the time of his passing. Having been raised on a farm, he was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, fishing, camping and traveling.
Farris was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Jimmy Neill and Joe Neill, his sister CeVene Slater and his son-in-law David Weaver.
He is survived by his wife Freda Neill, his son Bradley Neill, his daughter Ginger Weaver; his grandchildren Brittany Arnold and her husband Devin, Tyler Weaver and his wife Lauren, and T.J. Weaver; his sister Katie Ferraro and her husband Harper Creigh, his sisters-in-law Mattie Neill and Joan Neill, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Honorary pallbearers are Bradley Neill, T.J. Weaver, Tyler Weaver, Devin Arnold, Mike Pointer and John Ray Godfrey.
Visitation will be Monday, December 18, 2023 from 5-7 P.M. at Starbuck Family Funeral Home in Merkel, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at Fountaingate Merkel Church with Cody Cochran of Bethel Assembly of Anson officiating. Services are under the direction of Starbuck Family Funeral Home.
